oon Knight marks a big milestone for Marvel and Disney+ because it is the first show based on a character that wasn’t introduced in an MCU movie (another one will be Ms. Marvel in May 2022). Moon Knight tells the story of Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. He discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt. Moon Knight got an 85 % rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is the lowest rating among Disney+ MCU shows but that doesn’t really tell the whole story. Moon Knight is more adult-oriented and slow-paced, offering the level of brutality in its action scenes that is unprecedented for a Marvel show.
Moon Knight matched Falcon and the Winter Soldier in its premiere run and it has better viewing figures than Hawkeye. Only Loki is ahead of the new show which is a strong showing for a previously unknown character. Moon Knight is very important in Marvel Comics canon and with Oscar Isaac in the role, it is quite possible that he will make an appearance in MCU movies as well. We will soon see, in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, how much Disney+ MCU shows and MCU movies really do interact with each other.
