It was one busy weekend, we must say. Only Disney+ was “business as usual” with Turning Red dominating over Encanto and Moana and Moon Knight ruling the TV shows chart, but others were quite productive. Over the course of the previous week, Netflix brought several movies and documentaries and their top ten is quite different than it was a few days ago. The first two spots are surprisingly not the Netflix originals, even though The In Between, a supernatural romance with Joey King (Kissing Booth) might look like one. It was number one in 57 markets, targeting a female audience, with Polish crime thriller Furioza coming in second, targeting the other half of the audience with solid reviews. It was number one in 38 markets on Friday, sliding sharply but maintaining a lot of second spots and generating good numbers. Third place belongs to the South Korean spy thriller Yaksha: Ruthless Operations. Dozen of number one spots in the Asian markets brought Yaksha up in the top ten. It’s followed by everlasting The Adam Project and by disturbing documentary Jimmy Saville: The British Horror Story and SpaceX-centered Return to Space doc, both Netflix Originals.
HBO got a new leader too, American Underdog won over King Richard and Dune, being a new inspiring real-life story of American quarterback Kurt Wagner. It was released in theatres in December, currently being on TVOD in North America, but it got an HBO release in South America and it went straight to number one in 20 markets which were enough to win. Reminds you of the power this part of the world is gaining in shaping the VOD ratings.
Chris Pine is the biggest winner of the weekend with his new spy movie All the Old Knives which is about two CIA agents and ex-lovers who are brought back together years after a failed rescue attempt and forced to blur the lines between profession and passion. The newcomer knocked Deep Water out of the number one spot and then there is Chris Pine again in the third place with his new action movie Contractor! That is not Amazon Prime Original as it is only available on Premium VOD along with its limited theatrical release. It will be available later on good old VOD (after 45 days) through Paramount+.
Speaking of TVOD, The Holy Trinity (Amazon, iTunes, Google) is still being dominated by Spider-Man: No Way Home. No surprises there.
