Deep in the wilderness of Lapland, Aatami Korpi is searching for gold. From time to time, the overflight of bombers and the distant sounds of war can be heard in the autumn night. Finally, the hard work is rewarded and the gold dust in the pan grows into gold chunks, and Aatami sets out to take his gold treasure to the nearest city. After he stumbles upon Nazi patrol led by SS Obersturmführer Bruno Helldorf, a breathtaking and gold-hungry chase through the destroyed and mined Lapland wilderness begins.

The film follows Finnish army machine gun company in Continuation War against Soviet Union, 1941–1944. Based on Väinö Linna's best selling novel Tuntematon Sotilas (The Unknown Soldier) and the novel's uncensored version, Sotaromaani (A War Novel).

The story bases on four Finnish brothers, nicknamed 'the Eura Daltons' who received nation-wide notoriety for tearing gas pumps apart when they needed cash. The cast is an impressive one: the brothers are portrayed by Peter Franzen, Lauri Nurkse, Niko Saarela and Jasper Pääkkönen while their really evil father is played by Vesa-Matti Loiri, one of the grand old men of Finnish cinema.

In the spring of 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explodes in the Soviet Union and a girl named Mimi arrives in a small village in the Tavastia region of the Southern Finland, filling 15-year-old Mariia's life with light for a moment. After twenty years, facing a dead end in her own life, a grown-up Mariia visits her childhood home and recalls the summer of her youth and the tragic autumn that followed. In a flood of memories, Mariia is forced to confront her past. Returning to the summer of her first love in the 80's, Mariia must let go of the guilt that swallows up all the light and forgive other people as well as herself.
