Are you expecting Squid Game to rule the world over the course of the whole year? Yes, you guessed that one. There’s a huge gap between Korean super hit and French superhit Lupin at 2nd place and then another considerable margin between Lupin and Sex/Life that ended in third place. Bridgerton finished at fourth (it was very close), followed by New Amsterdam, Money Heist (this could switch by the very end of the year), Lucifer, Who Killed Sara?, Ginny and Georgia, and Maid. That’s the Top Ten of Global Demand. But if you look closely at the biggest markets, results can be quite different.
In the US, the biggest Netflix market by far, Squid Game is third, behind Manifest (2nd) and kid show CoComelon. Which must be running 24/7 in many households, given the huge lead over pretty much everything. CoComelon is unbeatable and you can see crazy numbers of some CoComelon clips on YouTube as well, so this should not be a surprise. Ginny and Georgia finished 4th in the US market, followed by Bridgerton, Maid, Who Killed Sara?, iCarly, The Circle, and All American.
How about Germany? Similar story – Squid Game is third and the chart is ruled over by another kid classic – Paw Patrol. Second is, there comes a big surprise, Riverdale, which is huge in Germany. Fourth place belongs to Lupin, followed by Who Killed Sara?, S.W.A.T., Bridgerton, Ginny and Georgia, The Blacklist, and Money Heist. What about the rest of Europe? You would bet that Lupin won in France, but it was Paw Patrol again (Lupin was 2nd). Money Heist was number one in Spain? Wrong again, it wasn’t even in the top ten (!), with Lupin being the overall winner.
The Japanese market is dominated by anime titles and South Korean shows produced by Netflix (Crash Landing on You at 4th and Vincenzo at 5th ahead of Squid Game at 7th place). US shows? Not a chance in the top ten. You have to go to 85th place to find Lupin and to 96th to dig for some Sex Education.
The last stop is Brazil and here you can see the importance of local titles. The first three spots are reserved for Brazilian TV hits like Chiqutitas, As Aventuras de Poliana, or Carrossel. In fourth place, you will find Paw Patrol and only the latter half of the Top Ten cater more to global taste with titles like Squid Game, Lupin, Lucifer and Bridgerton.
