The biggest movie hits in theatres last year? Spider-Man: No Way Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, F9: The Fast Saga, Shang-Chi And The Legend of The Ten Rings, or Godzilla vs. Kong. It is no coincidence that you can find the same titles in the Top Ten chart of last year’s most-watched movie trailers on YouTube. Yes, there is also Matrix Resurrections which is a theatrical flop, but at the same time the most pirated movie lately, so we can argue that YouTube’s trailer views are a good measure of future success. What else is destined for greatness according to last year’s statistics?
The obvious winner is The Batman, a hugely anticipated March 2022 release. Every single trailer so far was an event with easter egg analysis and lengthy explanatory videos blooming everywhere mere hours after the release. Then there is Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, the follow-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home (trailer premiering at the end of the said movie) with a release planned for May 2022. Online fans are excited for the horror movie Black Phone (February 2022) and Michael Bay’s upcoming action thriller Ambulance (also February). Disney’s Turning Red had good ratings as well, but it won’t get to see the theatres. It will be exclusively released on Disney+ in March. What else is up and coming? Sony’s auctioneer Uncharted with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, or Warner Bros.’ third instalment of Fantastic Beasts. There are also big tentpole movies that are yet to release their trailers or even the older ones that were repeatedly postponed (Top Gun: Maverick). Be sure to stay tuned because we post new articles about YouTube’s most-viewed trailers every month. It’s a good way to stay informed about the most anticipated blockbusters of 2022.
